Interview!
Jan. 31st, 2009 04:57 pmInterview questions from
caladria. I love this meme! If you want me to ask you questions, just comment and ask.
1) What attracts you to a fandom? Not just watching a programme, but actually ficcing/talking about it/meta-ing it?
This is interesting for a couple of reasons for me. One is that the shows that I talk or meta about (which is something I mostly do IRL rather than online, oddly) and the shows I fic for are two completely different beasts. The other is that up until last year, it never would have occured to me that I might consider writing fic for any show - I didn't really see the point, and I was pretty nervous of the whole idea of fandom. Writing fic now is symptomatic of a complete change in the way I react to a certain type of show (this is a post in itself, which I wrote in this space before realising it was rather off the point and cutting it - I'll post it later, maybe).
Shows I talk about are shows like House, Life on Mars, The West Wing or Veronica Mars, all of which I think are really good. They stand up to deconstruction well and are for the most part incredibly well written (with the exception of the flashbackery in VM). In particular, West Wing (the Sorkin years) is something I genuinely believe is a classic piece of TV which will be shown and discussed for years as a masterpiece.
Mostly I can't imagine writing fic for those shows because they're so good. They're beautifully fitted together and they feel self-contained. There's not anything there that feels like a need.
Shows I fic about are shows that previously I just wouldn't have watched because there is usually something missing in them. Gaping holes that would previously have annoyed me now beckon to me - they're opportunities. So, for example, you have the gap between the end of 1x04 and 1x05 in Torchwood. How they hell do they get from (a) to (b)? It's totally unexplained, but now, suddenly, I find that interesting. How the hell to SG1 manage to go through the shit they do and stay sane? Or do they? Fic is for shows, in some ways, with bad writing. In a lot of ways, I can't even enjoy those shows without fic because without adding that rounded character depiction, they don't quite work but with it, they can fly. I find it interesting that it's pretty rare for me to watch a show and then look for/start to write fic for it. Usually, I start reading someones fic about a show and then get into watching the show because they've sold me on the characters (the honours go to
synecdochic for Stargate,
copperbadge for Torchwood and will eventually be
paperclipbitch's for Merlin - I can just see it coming).
2) If you had to pick an OTP, who would you pick and why?
Arggg! That's really hard! Ummm. In terms of couples I see as together forever, the only one I can think of is Cam/JD from the Broken Wings 'verse. I love Jack/Daniel to bits but they're broken by their lives and I can't see them retiring together somehow - too many memories. Jack/Ianto are sweet but not long term - Jack's the guy who picks up the pieces and helps you to get back in the game, not the guy you stay with.
Thinking about couples I think have the best chemistry though, I think I'd have to go for Jack/Daniel.
3) Where do you want to be in five years' time?
Settled in a teaching job, ICT co-ordinator, thinking about going for a promotion to the senior management team in the next couple of years.
Online, on Dreamwidth, still writing, and maybe even getting somewhere on the original story I have stashed away waiting to mature.
4) Where's your default LJ icon from?
I don't actually know! It was made by
spikes_kitty but ISTR she just mentioned getting the image off Getty's without saying who it was by. When I got it, it looked nothing like me, but I inadvertently got a very similar haircut at the start of the month :)
5) Can you touch your nose with your tongue?
Nope! I can roll my tongue though.

Jan. 5th, 2009 09:21 amI can't resist a meme this morning, so here are some WIP snippets for your delectation. Any of them take your fancy, you're welcome to cheerlead :) There are a couple of other things floating around in my brain which haven't made it quite as far as actual text files yet, the most notable being some post decension Jack/Daniel figuring things out again which I really want to call Roses in December for no good reason except that I like the quote. And the Sam/Janet fic, which I am currently too sad about Janet dying to write (yes, I know, but for me it only just happened).
When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.
( 1.5 each of Torchwood and SG1 )

Jul. 29th, 2008 01:31 pmSo, in lieu of working on finishing off the draft of the story I'm writing, I have been memeing, as tagged by
ahlai. It's possible that this afternoon I will even do some work :)
( questions, questions )
As for tagging people, I don't really know! Who on my flist fancies a bit of distraction for their afternoon? If so, consider yourself tagged :)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs and replace any question that they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves.
B) Tag eight people to do this quiz. Those who are tagged cannot refuse. These people must state who they were tagged by and cannot tag the person whom they were tagged by.

3. At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people
